Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Shimla to Tangnu, touching scenic stretches like Rohru. Settle in and prepare for the journey ahead.
Stay: Homestay or Campsite
Evening: Trek briefing and gear check.
Altitude: 10,900 ft.
Trek Distance: 6-7 km | 4-5 hrs.
Begin your hike ascending via dense forests. Enjoy a gentle walking pace among towering trees until reaching the magnificent open meadow area.
Trail: Dense forest with a gradual ascent.
Campsite: Stay the night at beautiful Jamunta Thatch.
Altitude: 11,950 ft.
Trek Distance: 5 km | 4-5 hrs.
Experience shifting landscapes today as you march onwards from the beautiful thatch areas through forest exits leading into distinct open ridge trails.
Trail: Forest exit transitioning into open ridges.
Stay: Immerse in nature with a camp set at Odari.
Altitude: 13,000 ft.
Trek Distance: 6 km | 5-6 hrs.
Approach more rugged terrains taking on gradual ascents leading you right into a mesmerizing alpine zone with uninterrupted landscapes.
Trail: Gradual ascent touching the alpine zone.
Views: Prepare to be captivated by wide Himalayan range sights.
Stay: End the exhausting walk with rest in camp at Sundru Chhad.
Distance: ~10 km (both sides) | 7-8 hrs.
Set out on an early morning summit push up to the gorgeous Thorate Lake waters surrounded by serene mountain faces.
Highlights: Reach Thorate Lake, explore the location, spend great time with photography, and take your well-deserved rest near pristine shorelines.
Return: Trek back to the same camp setup safely at Sundru Chhad.
Trek Distance: 11 km | 6-7 hrs.
Take on the trail rolling downwards, moving progressively via winding ridges stretching back towards the familiar dense forest.
Trail: Extensive descent passing along ridges and thick forests.
Stay: Your last hiking camp stay will be nestled comfortably at Jamunta Thatch.
Trek: 6-7 km | 3-4 hrs.
Drive: 155 km | 6-7 hrs.
On your final trekking morning, hike steadily down the trail returning to base point Tangnu.
Return: Followup the finishing trek with a refreshing downhill 155-km drive back towards Shimla.
End: Arrive back with wonderful memories as the Thorate Lake Trek marks its happy closure.

By Air
- Shimla Airport (SLV) is the nearest, but has limited connectivity.
- Chandigarh Airport (IXC) is a better major option for all travelers.
By Train
- Kalka Railway Station is the nearest major railhead.
- The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is a beautiful heritage ride to reach Shimla.
By Bus
- Volvo and HRTC buses run regularly from Delhi (ISBT Kashmiri Gate) to Shimla.
- It's a comfortable overnight journey through the mountains.
Reach Shimla early in the morning on Day 1. The drive to Tangnu is long but incredibly scenic as you pass through Rohru valley.






- Age Requirement: Minimum 14 years.
- Experience: First-timers are welcome, though prior trekking experience is preferred. Good fitness is a must.
- Fitness Criteria:
- Ability to cover 5 km in 30 mins or 10 km in 70 mins without stress.
- For cycling enthusiasts: Ability to cycle 18 km in 50 minutes.
- Backpack Load: 10-12 kg (Self-carry) or 3-5 kg (Off-load option).
- Ideal BMI Range: 18.5 - 27.
