Rishikesh to joshimath

Altitude Bawta: 1875m/6,150ft.

Drive Distance: 245 km | 9-10 hours.

Joshimath (Jyotirmath) is a Scenic hill town in Chamoli District, Uttarakhand, situated at an altitude of 6,150 feet. Known as the gateway to the Himalayas, it is a key destination for trekking, mountaineering, and religious tourism. Joshimath also serves as the base for visiting famous pilgrimage sites like Badrinath, making it a popular choice for both adventure enthusiasts and spiritual travelers.

The Joshimath to Gulling Top trek, at an elevation of approximately 9,600 feet, is the first day of the Kuari Pass trek. It starts with a short drive to Dhak village, followed by a 4–6 km uphill hike. The scenic trail passes through rhododendron forests and local villages, offering breathtaking views of iconic Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi and Dronagiri, making it a perfect introduction to high-altitude trekking in Uttarakhand.

As the trek progresses, you’ll pass through thick oak and rhododendron forests, with scenic clearings offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks. The day concludes at Tali Forest, a tranquil campsite known for its pristine environment and peaceful atmosphere—perfect for experiencing nature at its best.

This is the most exciting day of the Kuari Pass trek, involving a steep ascent to Kuari Pass. Trekkers are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the Himalayas at the summit. After soaking in the views, the trail leads back to Tali Forest Camp for an overnight stay, making it a perfect blend of adventure and scenic beauty.

The last day of the Kuari Pass trek takes you across the stunning meadows of Auli, a popular hill station known for its world-class ski slopes and panoramic Himalayan views. From Auli, a short drive brings you back to Joshimath, concluding a memorable trekking experience in Uttarakhand.

The road journey from Joshimath to Rishikesh covers around 245–250 km and takes approximately 7 to 9+ hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The route follows NH7 and passes through scenic towns such as Pipalkoti, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag. Travelers are treated to stunning views of the Alaknanda and Ganges rivers, making it one of the most picturesque drives in Uttarakhand.

  • Frequent buses from Delhi (ISBT Kashmiri Gate) to Dehradun.
  • Delhi to Dehradun: 250 km | 6-7 hr via Meerut Expressway.
  • Both Volvo (AC) and Ordinary (UTC) buses are available throughout the night.

By Train

  • Nearest Junction: Dehradun Railway Station (DDN).
  • Well connected by Nanda Devi Express, Jan Shatabdi, and Mussoorie Express.
  • Highly recommended for a comfortable overnight journey from Delhi.

By Air

  • Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport (DED).
  • Airport is ~25 km (1 hr) from the main Dehradun city center.
  • Direct flights available from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
Drop-off Information:

The trek ends at Auli. From here, we provide transportation back to Dehradun Railway Station. Expect to reach Dehradun between 06:00 PM and 08:00 PM. Plan your onward journey accordingly.

Eligibility for Buran Ghati Trek
  • Age Requirement: Minimum 14 years.
  • Experience: First-timers are welcome, though prior trekking experience is preferred. Good fitness is a must.
  • Fitness Criteria:
    • Ability to cover 5 km in 30 mins or 10 km in 70 mins without stress.
    • For cycling enthusiasts: Ability to cycle 18 km in 50 minutes.
    • Backpack Load: 10-12 kg (Self-carry) or 3-5 kg (Off-load option).
    • Ideal BMI Range: 18.5 - 27.
