Drive from NJP to Yuksom

Altitude Yuksom: 1,800 m / 5,700 ft

Drive Distance: 150 km | 8 hrs

The journey begins with a long driving day from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) tracing the gorgeous Teesta river into Sikkim. You will reach Yuksom, the historical base of the trek, nestled at 1,800 meters. Prepare for the grand adventure that awaits you the next morning!

Your trek officially begins! Starting from Yuksom, you'll enter the dense, lush trails of Khangchendzonga National Park towards Sachen.

Note on Leeches: There is a high chance of encountering leeches in these damp forests. Remember to carry salt bags or anti-leech spray with you.

Today involves stepping up in altitude. You'll hike through Bakhim (2,650 m / 8,700 ft) where you can take a breather before progressing to the scenic settlement of Tshokha. You will camp at 3,000 meters offering wonderful evening views.

Get ready for a demanding but incredibly rewarding trek. You'll ascend from Tsokha through beautiful rhododendron forests to Phedang (3,700 m / 12,100 ft). You'll cross Deorali Top (4,000 m) adorned with prayer flags, before descending slightly to the spectacular grazing meadows of Dzongri (4,000 m).

A crucial day for letting your body adapt to the high altitude. Wake up early for an awe-inspiring sunrise hike to Dzongri Top (4,150 m) to witness Mt. Kangchenjunga glowing in the first morning light. Afterward, rest and explore the meadows.

Resume the trail from Dzongri, descending towards Kokchhurung (3,700 m) set by the Prek Chu river. After spending some time by the river, you'll hike up along the valley walls reaching the sprawling pastoral grounds of Thansing at 3,950 meters.

The trek today is relatively short but involves navigating higher altitues. You will approach the rugged terrain making your way to Lamuney, an incredible campsite nestled right under the grand peaks. Rest early in preparation for the big day tomorrow.

The summit day is long, starting well before dawn. You will ascend past the beautiful, serene Samiti Lake (4,300 m). Pushing further into the high moraine, you'll finally reach Goechala viewpoint 1 (4,600 m) directly facing the towering eastern wall of Kangchenjunga. After soaking in the magic, you'll retrace your steps all the way down to Thansing or Kokchhurung (3,950 m).

Today entails an extensive lateral walk avoiding the steep climb back up to Dzongri. You will trace the deep forests past Phedang (3,700 m), steadily losing altitude and finally pitching your tents at the familiar Tshokha settlement for a well-deserved rest.

A continuous descent takes you back down through the familiar dense jungle tracks of Khangchendzonga National Park. You pass Bakhim and Sachen on the way down, finally popping out into the vibrant culture of Yuksom bringing a joyful end to the trek.

Pack your bags for the final stretch of your journey. You'll hop into a vehicle for the scenic 8-hour drive from Yuksom back to the New Jalpaiguri (NJP) transport hub. Plan your onward journey keeping traffic delays in mind!
