Dehradun To Gangotri

Altitude: 3,100 m/ 10,200 ft.

Drive Distance: 250 km (8-9 hours)

Your magnificent journey to the origins of the Ganges begins with a beautiful long drive from Dehradun to the holy high-altitude town of Gangotri. Tracing the breathtaking valleys of the Bhagirathi River, you'll pass through charming mountain towns. Gangotri serves as our serene basecamp, completely surrounded by imposing peaks and dense deodar forests, setting the perfect spiritual and adventurous tone for the trek.

Today is dedicated entirely to crucial acclimatization in the high-altitude environment of Gangotri. You can spend the morning taking short walks around the valley to help your body adapt. Post lunch, immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting the sacred Gangotri Temple, exploring the vibrant local market, or simply sitting peacefully by the roaring Bhagirathi river.

The trek officially commences as you leave the treeline behind, entering the immense Gangotri National Park. The trail winds beautifully along the roaring Bhagirathi River, carving its way through deep gorges. You will finally arrive at the picturesque campsite of Chirbasa, affectionately named for its tranquil environment heavily shaded by ancient pine (Chir) trees.

Leaving the pine forests of Chirbasa, the landscape transforms drastically into a stark, rocky, and barren high-altitude desert. The rugged trail gradually ascends to Bhojwasa, the widest point in the valley. Here, you'll be greeted by your first magnificent sunset views of the colossal Bhagirathi peaks looming over the expansive campsite.

Today is a challenging and incredibly rewarding day! We trek towards the magnificent Gaumukh—the snout of the monumental Gangotri Glacier and the true source of the Ganges. After paying your respects, the trail gets steeper and demands a rigorous rocky climb over moraines to finally reach the high-altitude, spectacular alpine meadows of Tapovan, lying right at the base of the mighty Mount Shivling.

After waking up to an unforgettable, golden sunrise on Mount Shivling and taking in the panoramic grandeur of Tapovan, we begin our descent. The route back down over the sweeping glacial moraines is tricky but beautifully scenic. We retrace our steps past Gaumukh and peacefully descend back to the welcoming campsite of Bhojwasa for a restful evening.

Embarking on the longest trekking day of the journey, we make our way back through the enchanting trails of Chirbasa, losing altitude gradually and stepping back into the calming embrace of the pine forests. Returning to Gangotri feels triumphant, allowing you to celebrate your incredible accomplishment beneath the stars in this sacred sanctuary.

After a warm morning tea and saying a final goodbye to the mighty Bhagirathi River, we hop into our vehicles to drive down to Dehradun. Traveling through those familiar winding mountain roads, you'll arrive back in Dehradun by early evening, carrying incredible stories and memories of the sacred Gaumukh Tapovan trek.
