Shimla to Larot / Chanshal Base

Drive: Approx. 160 km | 7-9 hr.

Route: via Kharapathar and Rohru

Your journey begins from Shimla, driving through the scenic routes of Kharapathar and Rohru. The drive takes around 7–9 hours, offering glimpses of apple orchards and the Pabbar River. Upon reaching Larot, the gateway to Chanshal, we set up camp near the village or move closer to the Chanshal Pass base. Enjoy an evening of settling in and overnight camping under the stars.

Trek to Chanshal Pass & Meadows

Trek: Exploration of Chanshal Ridge

Highlights: Saru Lake & Pabbar Valley views

After breakfast, we begin our upward trek from Larot towards the Chanshal Pass. The trail leads through lush green meadows (thatch) that are characteristic of this region. We trek towards the serene Saru Lake, exploring the ridge that offers sweeping views of Dodra Kwar and the Pabbar Valley. We spend the overnight camping in the meadow area, surrounded by alpine beauty.

Chanshal Top & Return Journey

Altitude: Chanshal Top (4,520m)

Activity: Photography & Return Trek

Today, we trek to the highest point of our journey—Chanshal Top (4,520m). We aim to reach either for sunrise or sunset views, depending on the schedule, to witness the majestic Himalayan peaks in all their glory. Spend time exploring the surrounding meadows and capturing the stunning landscape through photography. Later, we trek back down to the campsite near Larot/Chanshal base for our final night in the mountains.

Return to Shimla

Drive: Return to Shimla

Conclusion of the trek

On the final day, we pack up our camp and bid farewell to the meadows. We drive back from Larot to Shimla, retracing our path through Rohru and Kharapathar. The journey concludes upon arrival in Shimla, carrying back memories of the pristine Chanshal Pass.

Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) is the major hub. Shimla Airport (SLV) has limited flights from Delhi.
By Train
The narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is a UNESCO heritage route. Kalka is the nearest broad-gauge station.
By Bus
Regular HRTC and private Volvo buses ply between Delhi (ISBT Kashmiri Gate) and Shimla.
Pro Tip for Travelers

The drive from Shimla to Larot is long but scenic. Reach Shimla a day early to start fresh on Day 1. The Chanshal region is known for its sudden weather changes, so pack accordingly.

Eligibility for Buran Ghati Trek
  • Age Requirement: Minimum 14 years.
  • Experience: First-timers are welcome, though prior trekking experience is preferred. Good fitness is a must.
  • Fitness Criteria:
    • Ability to cover 5 km in 30 mins or 10 km in 70 mins without stress.
    • For cycling enthusiasts: Ability to cycle 18 km in 50 minutes.
    • Backpack Load: 10-12 kg (Self-carry) or 3-5 kg (Off-load option).
    • Ideal BMI Range: 18.5 - 27.
