Day-by-Day Itinerary
D1
Rishikesh to Lohajung (Drive)

Altitude: 2,300 m / 7,800 ft.

Drive Distance: 250 km | approx. 10 hours.

Your Brahmatal Trek adventure begins with a long but incredibly scenic drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung, a charming village tucked deep in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The road winds along the turquoise Alaknanda River, passing through the sacred town of Karanprayag and the apple orchards of Tharali, offering glimpses of the Garhwal Himalayas at every turn. Upon reaching Lohajung, settle in, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and spend the evening acclimatizing. The peaceful village, surrounded by forested ridgelines and faraway snow peaks, sets the perfect mood for the days of trekking ahead.

Today marks your first day on the trail as you leave Lohajung and begin the ascent toward Gujreni. The path climbs steadily through dense canopies of oak, maple, and rhododendron, with shafts of sunlight filtering through the branches. The forest is alive with birdsong and the distant sound of mountain streams. As the trail gains altitude, occasional clearings reveal sweeping views of the Chamoli valleys below. Gujreni is a beautiful forest campsite — quiet, cool, and refreshingly remote. Settle in, enjoy a warm meal, and get a good night's rest before the next day's ascent.

Leaving Gujreni behind, today's trek takes you deeper into the high-altitude wilderness as you make your way to Tilandi. The trail ascends through increasingly open terrain, with the treeline gradually thinning to reveal vast alpine meadows dusted white in winter. On a clear morning, the towering silhouettes of Trishul (7,120 m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,309 m) dominate the skyline — a sight that instantly motivates tired legs. Tilandi is a flat, open campsite perched at 10,500 feet, with panoramic views that make the effort entirely worthwhile. This is the night before the summit push, so rest well and stay warm.

This is the heart of the Brahmatal Trek — the day you've been building toward. Starting early in the morning with packed lunches and warm layers, you ascend through snow-covered slopes toward Jhandi Top, where the views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks are already extraordinary. The trail then continues upward through a pristine winter landscape to the Brahmatal Summit at 12,250 feet. At the top, the frozen Brahmatal Lake lies in silent, icy splendor, framed by a 360-degree panorama of snow-clad peaks including Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and distant white giants stretching to the horizon. After soaking in this once-in-a-lifetime view, descend carefully to the Brahmatal camp for a well-earned rest under a sky full of Himalayan stars.

Today is the longest day of the trek as you make the full descent from the high-altitude Brahmatal camp all the way back to Lohajung. The 10-kilometre trail retraces your path through the forested ridgelines and meadows that greeted you on the way up, now seen in a different light as the memories of the summit linger with every step. The descent is steep in sections, so trekking poles are recommended. By evening, you return to Lohajung, where the warmth of a guesthouse and a hot meal are a truly welcome reward. Celebrate your achievement with your fellow trekkers — you have just conquered the Brahmatal!

Your Brahmatal journey draws to a close with a long, scenic drive from Lohajung back to Rishikesh. The road descends through the valleys of Chamoli, passing the sacred Nanda Devi temples at Tharali and the river confluence at Karanprayag, where the Pindar and Alaknanda rivers meet in a swirl of blue and green. The drive offers one last look at the great Himalayan ranges before the plains open up ahead. By evening, you arrive in Rishikesh, your heart full of memories — frozen lakes, starlit campsites, and the quiet majesty of the Garhwal Himalayas.
