Embark on an exhilarating high-altitude adventure in the Garhwal Himalayas. Trek through ancient oak forests and vibrant meadows before making a thrilling snow-bound ascent to the 15,069 ft summit, gazing upon majestic peaks like Nanda Devi and Mt. Trishul.
Altitude Sankri: 1,950 m/ 6,400 ft.
Drive: 200 km | 9-10 hrs.
Your grand Bali Pass adventure begins with an exhilarating road journey from Dehradun to the basecamp village of Sankri. As you trace the beautiful valleys carved by the Yamuna and Tons rivers through Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, you'll be treated to stunning vistas of the Garhwal Himalayas. The peaceful, remote atmosphere of Sankri sets the perfect stage for the days of high-altitude trekking ahead.
Altitude Seema: 2,600 m/ 8,500 ft | Dharkot: 2,400 m/ 8,000 ft.
Trek Distance: 4 km | 3-4 hrs | Drive Distance: 24 km | 2 hrs.
After a hearty breakfast, we take a short 24 km drive to Dharkot to formally commence our trek. From Dharkot, the trail beautifully winds its way along the roaring Supin River towards Seema. Walking through pristine pine and oak forests while passing charming wooden bridges makes this relatively short hike incredibly magical and calming.
Altitude: 3,100 m/ 10,200 ft.
Trek Distance: 5-6 km | 5-6 hrs.
Today's trek takes you steeply upwards, leaving the treeline behind as you ascend towards the magnificent alpine meadows of Devsu Bugyal. The grand clearings open up spectacular, sweeping views of the Kala Nag (Black Peak) and Swargarohini massifs. This lush meadow campsite offers unparalleled beauty, allowing you to relax amidst blooming wildflowers and towering peaks.
Altitude Ruinsara Tal: 3,600 m/ 11,800 ft.
Trek Distance: 9 km | 5 - 6 hrs.
You'll traverse a fascinating landscape that gradually transforms from rich meadows to a rocky moraine terrain on the way to Ruinsara Tal. This sacred, pristine glacial lake sits majestically at the base of Swargarohini. The vibrant blue waters contrasted against rocky, snowy slopes offer a photographer's paradise and a profound sense of tranquility.
Altitude Odari: 4,000 m/ 13,100 ft.
Trek Distance: 4 km | 3- 4 hrs.
Leaving the idyllic lake behind, the trail plunges deep into the stark, raw high-altitude world. We gradually ascend alongside river beds and boulders towards Odari (meaning ‘cave’ in the local language), historically known to have sheltered sages. The campsite lies on a rugged moraine field, bringing you significantly closer to the monumental Bali Pass.
Altitude: 4,600 m/ 15,100 ft.
Trek Distance: 5 km | 6 - 7 hrs.
This is a crucial acclimatization and positioning day. The steep, arduous climb to Bali col camp (Advance Base Camp) takes you high up near the snowline. You'll navigate tricky ridges and a vast snowy expanse while breathing in thin air. The campsite sits on a vantage point that rewards the immense effort with panoramic views across the incredible Yamunotri range.
Altitude Bali Pass: 4,950 m/ 16,200 ft | Lower Dhamni: 3,350 m/ 11,100 ft.
Trek Distance: 14 km | 10 - 11 hrs.
Today is the grand summit day! You'll start before dawn, embarking on a demanding, technical ascent to conquer the legendary Bali Pass (16,200 ft). Standing at the pass offers a breathtaking, 360-degree view of Swargarohini, Banderpunch, and the Ruinsara peaks. After savoring the victory, you'll undertake a thrilling, long descent down alpine trails all the way to the forested camps of Lower Dhamni.
Altitude Janki Chatti: 2,600 m/ 8,500 ft.
Trek Distance: 8 km | 4 - 5 hrs | Drive Distance: 170 km | 7-8 hrs.
On your final day, a descending trail heavily shaded by forests leads you out of the wilderness and towards the famous pilgrimage town of Janki Chatti, an access point to Yamunotri. Here, we bid goodbye to the trail and embark on a scenic drive back to Dehradun, carrying back a lifetime's worth of immense accomplishments and beautiful Himalayan memories.
